What to Bring to the PSI Testing Center

By Drone Test Finder Team5 min read

You've studied for weeks, you know your sectional charts, and you've finally booked your appointment at a local PSI testing center. The last thing you want is to be turned away at the door because you forgot a required document.

The Absolute Requirements

If you forget these, you will not be allowed to test and you will forfeit your $175 fee:

1. Your FTN (FAA Tracking Number)

You must have your FTN. While the proctor can usually look this up if you booked through your True Talent account, it is highly recommended to bring it written down on a piece of paper.

2. Valid Government-Issued Photo ID

Your ID is the most critical item. It must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be government-issued (e.g., Driver's License, Passport, State ID card, Military ID).
  • Be valid and current (not expired).
  • Include your photo.
  • Include your signature.
  • Include your current physical residential address.

The Address Rule (Most Common Reason for Rejection)

If your driver's license has an old address, or a PO Box, the testing center will reject it. You must bring a secondary proof of address. Acceptable documents include a utility bill, mortgage statement, or vehicle registration matching the name on your ID and showing your current physical address.

What You Are Allowed to Bring

The FAA allows you to bring a few specific testing aids into the exam room. The proctor will inspect these before you enter.

  • A basic calculator: It must be standard, non-programmable, and not have any memory/text capabilities. You cannot use the calculator on your phone.
  • A transparent plotter/ruler: Helpful for measuring distances on the sectional charts.
  • A magnifying glass: We highly recommend this! The testing supplement book features small, sometimes blurry maps. A magnifying glass makes reading elevations and airspace borders much easier.

What Will Be Provided For You

The testing center will provide the following items:

  • The Airman Knowledge Testing Supplement Book (this contains all the charts and figures for the test).
  • Scratch paper and two pencils.
  • A locker to store your personal belongings.

What to Leave in Your Car

Testing centers are incredibly strict about electronic devices. You will be required to empty your pockets and store all personal items in a locker. To save time, consider leaving the following in your car:

  • Smartwatches (Apple Watches are strictly forbidden in the testing room).
  • Hats and heavy jackets (proctors will ask you to remove them or inspect them).
  • Large bags or backpacks.
